Stains are Inevitable
Stains on carpets and upholstery are unavoidable, especially if you live with children or pets. The many different kinds of stains that take place from a wide variety of items can make removal tricky. Not all stains are equal, nor is the process of its removal the same. Some stains may need water only, whereas some others may require some light cleaning agent. The techniques of removal also vary depending on the type of stain.
Attend to them Quickly
Getting rid of a stain starts with identifying how the stain has occurred. Firstly, identify the source of stain – what caused it? Did it happen from blood, tomato ketchup, blueberries or some other item? Secondly, what is the type of fabric that has been stained – is it polyester, cotton, jute or something else? Thirdly, how old is the stain? The method of stain removal will depend on the answer to these questions. Whether it is upholstery or carpets, the rule of thumb for stain removal is to do it as promptly as possible.
Stains can be divided into 3 categories. Oil based, water based, and protein stains.
• Oil based stains – All food items that leave oil marks on upholstery fall under this category. To remove oil stains you can use warm water and a suitable cleaning agent. However, before cleaning, remove excess food and then blot with paper towel to remove excess oil. Try using baby powder or corn starch to pull as much oil from the affected area as possible first. Then clean it with water and cleaning agent followed by drying.
• Water based stains – Coffee and similar beverages are well known to produce water-based stains. These are easier to remove, but you need to do it quickly. Fresh stains have to be blotted and then soaked in cold water for 30 minutes.
• Protein-based stains – Protein stains occur from blood or sweat and need special treatment for removal. While vinegar and baking soda works well for sweat stains, blood stains are better treated with salt and water.
Since carpets are very costly and upholstery fabrics often times need special treatments for cleaning, you can always call professionals for stain removal advice or better yet, leave it up to a professional carpet cleaning company. For certain stains, a DIY method may cause more harm than good, and your best option for removing stains from upholstery may be a professional upholstery cleaning service. They can remove stains from carpets and upholstery without hassle.
